On January 4th, cricket fans across the country were upset when Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his resignation from the captaincy of Indian ODI team.
Virat Kohli is the new commander of the team and he has displayed his capability in the first match by leading the team up front which helped India to chase massive score of 350 against England but Mahendra Singh Dhoni's contribution as a captain will be unmatched.
Sunil Gavaskar, former cricket captain said, “I am glad that Dhoni retired from captaincy and not from the team otherwise he would have sat on dharna.”
Under Dhoni’s leadership, India won 110 out of 199 matches approximately winning 60% of the matches. This is the best statistics in the winning ratio for any Indian captain , followed by Azharuddin and Saurav Ganguly.

He scored an average of 53.93 while playing as a captain ,which is again note-worthy when compared to the other captains. He came low down the order and stayed not out in more than 26 matches which itself holds a record as a captain.

In his 9 years of tenure from 2007 to 2016, he led the team and helped India achieve all three major ICC events from Champions Trophy to first World T20 in 2007 and 2011 World Cup. Even under pressure, he managed to maintain his performance.

His bold decisions helped to strike a balance in the team. He even dropped strong performers like Sehwag, Dravid and Ganguly when deemed necessary. These strategies have been proved to be effective.

In another crucial matche, he handed over the ball to Joginder Sharma in the last over of World T20, who was not an experienced bowler then. It baffled the others but his judgment helped India win the match.

Sachin Tendulkar considered as the God of cricket said, “Dhoni is the best captain I’ve played under.”
As Dhoni bid adieu to captainship, spectators across the country are still waiting for his game to add colour to the game.
