Protests by employees of OEN India enters 15th day

Protests by employees of OEN India Limited in Peenya enter its 15th day. The company shut without giving any of the workers any notice.


Merry Kuti, one of the workers who is the sole breadwinner of her family said, "The factory is closed since December 10 and we are sitting here outside the gate since that day. It is high time now that someone from the company should come and talk to us. We don't have money to feed our kids. What are we supposed to do?"
"We are running out of funds in order to run the company and so this decision has been taken," said Hans Mathew, the manager of the company. The Industrial Disputes Act 1947 states that no factory with 50 or more than 50 employees can be closed without giving a prior notice of minimum 15 days. It also states that in case of closure all the employees have to be paid one month's salary as compensation.
