Residents unhappy over tree cutting

Shruti Appu

Bangalore, April 15: Residents of Sahakar Nagar in Bangalore are complaining about losing their colony’s green cover as the municipal corporation of Bangalore is cutting trees for road widening.

Padmanabhan, a shop owner said, “The government does not ask the citizens for any suggestions, they do anything and everything according to their wish.” Bangalore is known as the air-conditioned city, but if the cutting of trees does not stop, the city will become barren soon, he added.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is cutting trees in the Controllerate of Quality Assurance Electronics Layout (CQAL) for road widening in the east of Bangalore, a south-Indian city.

Shobha Gopinath, a resident said, “BBMP workers cut down the trees which I had planted, saying that the trees would hinder the road widening.”

“This CQAL road is an intermediate road. We are widening this road to ease the existing traffic and help the residents of A, B and C blocks of the CQAL,” said N Nagaraj, the assistant executive engineer of BBMP. However, he added that none of the trees are cut. Only the branches which are grown towards the road and hinder free movement have been trimmed.

But, Shekarappa, one of the workers allotted by the BBMP said, “We have cut down around 10 trees in order to get more space.”

Nalini Vijayashankar, a housewife said, “We are happy that the government is doing things like building flyovers, widening roads etc to help us. But what are they doing to preserve the green cover,” she questioned.
