BANGALORE (Oct. 11)—Puttenahalli Lake in J.P. Nagar's VII Phase was shrinking due to illegal dumping of construction debris and encroachment by slum dwellers.
This was not a new sight for Bangloreans. But what was new was the initiative taken by local residents to bring the lake back to life.
The official citizens' group known as Puttenahalli Neighborhood Lake Improvement Trust (PNLIT) was founded with the cooperation of the city corporation, the Bangalore Bruhat Mahanagar Palike.
The lake is home to many bird species.
In just 18 months, the trust has not only saved the lake, but also restored its beauty.
The lake has been transformed and is again home to many varieties of birds, fish, snakes and insects. Residents now enjoy taking morning and evening walks along a path the trust built around the lake.
